It was a strange feeling to be traveling for the first time only with film equipment and not taking any photos. The way I have to work is now completely different. While you can go more or less unplanned when taking photos, you have to do a lot more preparatory work and planning when filming. On my first “film tour” I tried out a lot and immediately found out that there was a lot to learn before I could create my first small nature documentary. However, the topic has already been decided and planning has already started...
I shot the first clips in Vietnam with the Sony FX3 in 4K25P 4:2:2 XAVC-I. In the future I will probably also record in ProRes RAW with an external recorder in order to keep storage costs lower and produce more universally usable material. The necessary equipment for later processing of the raw material should not be underestimated. A fast computer with a modern, powerful graphics card, very large external memory with a fast connection are indispensable and, in addition to the expensive film equipment, cause additional high costs.
